The Association of Medical Students, University of Lagos (AMSUL) in partnership with the University of Lagos Association of Dental Students (ULADS) and The Oasis Initiative proudly present the Ishaga Reach Out. It is a general medical outreach focusing on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), especially breast cancer, hypertension and diabetes.
In 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that Nigeria’s probability of dying prematurely from non-communicable diseases is 20%. Reports have also shown that non-communicable diseases account for about 24% of the total deaths in Nigeria, with breast cancer and diabetes mellitus being the most common cause. This trend is estimated to increase, if urgent evidence-based policies to curtail these effects are not implemented.
“Healthcare providers can do their best to inform the public about the dangers of non-communicable diseases, how to prevent and detect them. This is why AMSUL has decided to come in”, said the AMSUL President – Dr Bola Owate. For a couple of years, AMSUL has earned a reputation for organizing community support programs, volunteer medical services and services for the less privileged and less healthcare-covered members of society.
AMSUL is an organization established in 1966, a student body of over 700 undergraduates of Medicine and Surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
At the Ishaga Reach Out, AMSUL aims to increase awareness of the various non-communicable diseases in the community, how to prevent them and advise the community on how to make informed decisions about their health. Through this community medical outreach, the organisation would provide free healthcare services including, a health talk, blood pressure and sugar level checks, medical consultations with seasoned health professionals, general dental check-ups, with free medications for all members of the community who attend.
Furthermore, this outreach is a part of the series of programs organised by AMSUL, which are powered by Grandville Medical and Laser Clinic, Jacaranda Cancer Center, and Petrocam Nigeria limited. The event would hold on Saturday, the 29th of October 2022, at No. 1 Adeniji street, Off Ishaga road, Surulere, Lagos, starting from 10 am.
