Movie Review: Blood Sisters (Episode 1) – It’s a bloody affair

1

It’s definitely a bloody affair!

If I lay claim to have anticipated this new Nigerian series on Netflix Titled the “Blood Sisters”, that would have been Faux… I might have come across a forced ad on Snapchat about the movie once or twice, but I never let it play enough to digest what the film would be all about.

You can’t put all the blame on me though, Nollywood – even in current times – haven’t been living of to it’s potential in recent times. The movie industry hasn’t been daunting enough to venture into other genres apart from drama and when it does, it does so shabbily. So you would understand my hesitancy to begin another journey, I would potentially not be able to withstand pass the 1st episode.

However, based on some spectacular recommendations, I took a risk – I am joyful to say – has yet to be disappointing, even after watching Episode 1…

It started bright, like most Nollywood movies of today and with my biased point of view I kept seeing loopholes in the first 15 mins of the show. I mean: Why is the Assassin not subtle or given the cliché of a rough look? Why is Kola having a business meeting on his Engagement Day? How is Kola able to identify his assailant, where the security team couldn’t? And how on earth was he able to topple that criminal on his own?!… when he could have asked for support or gotten others to do it for him?

However, by the time I was halfway through the episode, I couldn’t exactly stop the anxiety I was feeling. I now realize I had developed certain attachments to some characters, I wouldn’t want to see fail and annoyed at others for being at the wrong place at the right time or vice versa. It doesn’t get better than that… for a TV show to be able to capture its audience enough for them to invest their emotions in it.

PROS
The Plot was actually well plotted, and the director did a pretty fair job executing and taking us on a somewhat “thriller” journey.

The Cinematography is top notch, camera angles for long distance and short distance shots is decent.

The Cast ensemble was beautiful, the acting was generally optimal, with Nancy Isime surprisingly impressive with her performance. I totally dig Ramsey Noah’s silent treatment – now, that is the bodyguard I wished for but never had. Hopefully, he is as efficient as he has been teased in other episodes.

The Action scene was not cringe worthy at least…

The Soundtrack was actually good, I like the live band cover of Chike’s popular song.

CONS
The Plot – as with most – do have some questionable logics. I personally feel the westernization of the story is a bit too obvious, It’s more relatable and realistic when this aspect is more subtle.

For the action scenes, many skit makers on TikTok have far better production than this…

Premise – A bride and her Chief bridesmaid accidentally murdered the groom on the engagement night in self defense and had to find a way to cover up said murder

My rating of episode 1 is a solid 7.5/10… while anticipating the next episode.

  1. I recently watched the first episode of Blood Sisters and I must say, it’s a promising start to the series. The storyline is engaging and the characters are intriguing, especially the three sisters who are the focus of the show. There’s plenty of suspense and gore, so if you’re a fan of horror and thriller genres, this show is definitely for you. The production value is top-notch and the acting is impressive. I’m excited to see where the series goes from here.
