On the 16th of December 2024, the Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) under the leadership of Dr Pamela Ajayi, held its Women’s Year-End Forum with the theme, “Confidence and Self-promotion: Overcoming Impostor Syndrome and Amplifying Your Voice”.
The event – moderated by Pharm Abimbola Adebakin (Public Relations Secretary of HFN and CEO of Advantage Health Africa) – had exceptional female leaders in the Nigerian healthcare industry in attendance. As well as a cross-section of students across various departments in the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) and College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL).
This year’s Women’s Year-End Forum included three insightful panel sessions and a session where matriarchs told their stories to inspire attendees. The first session titled, “Understanding and Addressing Impostor Syndrome” was taken by Dr Ngozi Onyia, founder Paelon Memorial Hospital. During which she extensively spoke on impostor syndrome and emphasized on preparation being key to helping one overcome it.
Dr Olayinka Jibunoh, founder of the Freudian centre led the second session on “Building Mental Health Fortitude in Healthcare professionals”, where she shared practical steps to overcoming Impostor syndrome and building resilience. Some of the tips she gave on building resilience include: being positive, embracing challenges as opportunities and seeking for support when necessary.
The third session tagged “Cultivating confidence and harnessing unique strengths” was facilitated by Mrs Okorocha, HFN Treasurer and Partner at Etti, Jackson & Edu. While the final session featured industry giants such as, Prof. Ibironke Akinsete, Dr Omonoe Esangbedo and Ms Irene Nwaukwa who shared their individual journeys on overcoming Impostor syndrome and attaining confidence.
Attendees of the event had great feedback, commending its informative content and exceptional facilitators. According to Pharm Nifesimi Agbede, “I learned that the first step to overcoming imposter syndrome is acknowledging the problem. I also discovered the importance of replacing negative thoughts, practicing self-compassion, and understanding that confidence is built through action”. Also, Medic Ayomide noted that the event surpassed her expectations.
