According to experts, fertility is the ability to reproduce or procreate. Unfortunately, not all humans are able to achieve this due to infertility, and this remains a significant challenge around the world affecting millions of people.
In Nigeria alone, various factors have been linked to infertility, including lifestyle changes, environmental influences, and underlying medical conditions. Additionally, the psychosocial and emotional impact of infertility on individuals experiencing it can be overwhelming, often accompanied by feelings of isolation, stigma, and uncertainty.
Despite advancements in medical science, many individuals facing fertility challenges still encounter barriers to accessing quality care, information, and support. Hence the need for open conversations, education, and community building around fertility issues. This informed the Fertility Summit, a premier event organised by the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Branch (MWAN Lagos), focused on improving fertility care and reproductive health outcomes in Nigeria, while fostering collaboration and innovation among professionals in the field.
Themed, “Fertility Journey – The Past, Present, and the Future”, the summit aims to bring together leading experts, researchers, and practitioners in the field of fertility and reproductive medicine to share knowledge, discuss latest developments, new technologies, innovations, and best practices for fertility care. Also to serve as a forum for individuals seeking information, support, and services in fertility preservation, infertility treatment, and reproductive health.
Beyond the healthcare aspect, this inaugural summit scheduled for the May 22nd, 2025, at the MRC Hall in LASUTH, Ikeja, will also debunk myths, explore patient’s perspective, religious perspective and financial options available for fertility treatment with Access Bank.
Speaking with the MWAN Lagos president and pioneer of the fertility summit, Dr Funmi Ige said, “There are complexities and emotional dimensions in different fertility journeys and space. Our goal is to increase awareness, explore innovative solutions, and provide a supportive community that will help put smiles on the faces of families with fertility challenges. Through this groundbreaking summit, we hope to provide a platform for experts, researchers, and individuals to share knowledge, experiences, and insights, as well as create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of individuals and families affected by fertility challenges”.
Open to all, this summit will feature renowned fertility facilities based in Lagos and experts, including the keynote speaker, Prof. Prieye Fiebai, a professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the National President of Assisted Fertility and Reproductive Health (AFRH). Others include Clinicians, Fertility specialists, Reproductive endocrinologists, Obstetricians and gynecologists. For more information, collaboration and participation, visit the MWAN Lagos pages.
