NMA Lagos Physicians’ Week 2023: Chairman urges government to take responsibility

The Opening Ceremony & Scientific Conference of the NMA Lagos Physicians’ Week 2023 held 25th October 2023, at BON Hotel Residency, GRA Ikeja, Lagos.

The event was a powered and value packed one that came in grand style with quality venue and guests which featured Prof Francis Adedayo Faduyile (OON), Past President, NMA as Keynote Speaker and Subtheme Speaker Dr. Yemisi Solanke Koya (Esq.), Chairman HEFAMAA Governing Board respectively, who both delivered an insightful, informative and impactful lecture.

The Opening Ceremony and Scientific Conference was declared open in grand style by Past Secretary General, NMA Chief (Dr.) Oluyomi Finnih. Also, in attendance was Dr. Sodeinde Ibironke, President MWAN Lagos State, who represented the Mother of the Day, Professor Rosemary Ogu, National President, MWAN and also represented all medical women in Lagos State, delivered an inspiring goodwill message and played a passionate motherly role during the august occasion.

Additionally, Dr.Oluwaserimi Adewumi Ajetunmobi, Commissioner for Health, Oyo State, Dr. George Uduku General Manager, GE, Health West Africa, Mr. Olabisi Makanjuola, NBA Chairman Lagos Branch and Engr. Adedotun Femi John, NSE Chairman, Ikeja Branch,
Dr. Tunde Ajayi, General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), who all delivered an inspiring and positively impactful Goodwill remarks.

The Theme of the Physicians’ Week 2023 is “This is our Chance to get it right in the Health Sector” was presented by the keynote speaker, Professor Francis Adedayo Faduyile (OON). The Subtheme was “Ethical Issues in Human Organ Donation” Presented by Dr.Yemisi, Solanke Koya (Esq).

In his speech, the NMA Chairman, Dr Benjamin Olowojebutu felicitated with all Doctors in Lagos and by extension Nigeria, on the occasion of Celebration of the Physicians’ Week 2023 and urged all to continue to do their utmost to provide the best possible care to all Lagosians and to Nigerians by extension and contribute their positive quota to nation building.

The Chairman NMA Lagos further charged and urged the state and federal government to stand up to the responsibility of the enormous challenges affecting Physicians and the healthcare system at large, ranging from poor work environment and infrastructures, the dwindling and significantly reduced number of Doctors with resultant humongous burden and other negative impact of almost impossible schedule of duties drawn for Doctors, active brain drains, untimely death of Doctors, hence paucity of health force.

The Chairman NMA Lagos Zone, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu also emphasized and reiterated that the Government must be held accountable in the manner by which they pay less attention to the healthcare sector and particularly the team lead of healthcare system, the Doctors who are selfless and sacrifice hugely their life to save lives.

As part of his deposit, is his recommendation to the Government to provide improved medical insurance for Doctors that should cover injury, accident and preventive care for Doctors and their immediate families which he described to instigate a two prong effect – complementary and compensatory. Moreso, he buttressed the importance of accountability and quality leadership and said it remains the key lever to growth and progress in the healthcare sector.

Awards were presented to guest speakers and other invited guests. Vote of thanks and profound gratitude was expressed to Guests, Doctors in Lagos and other Partners in Progress with NMA Lagos Zone, both in the past and present, who have contributed immensely and relentlessly to the resounding Success of NMA Lagos Physicians Week 2023 and other programs of the noble association in the past.
